Purpose of part-time job

 The purpose of your study in Japan is to learn Japanese and to enter a university or vocational school.The “Student” visa that you have is a status of residence granted to study Japanese at a Japanese language school.However, it is possible to work part-time during extracurricular hours within the scope of Japanese law in order to supplement living expenses, communicate with Japanese people, experience the Japanese work environment, apply the Japanese language learned in the classroom into practice, etc. However, you must not interfere with your studies by being absent or late because of your part-time job.

 



Before Starting a Part-time job,you must obtain a "Pcrmission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence".There are three ways to obtain "Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence" as follws.
  • First, when you enter Japan, you will receive it at the same time as your resident card at immigration at the airport. (The application form will be mailed together with your Certificate of Eligibility and Letter of Admission.)
  • If you have not applied at the airport, you can ask the school to apply for it after you enter the school. Until you get permission, it takes about one month.
  • After entering Japan and registering your address at the ward office, you may go to the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau to apply in person with your passport and resident card. It takes about one month to receive permission.
The “Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the status of Residence” can be confirmed with your Passport and residence card.

Notes on a part-time job

  • The part-time job must not exceed 28 hours per week.(During spring, summer, and winter vacations, students may work part-time up to 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.)
  • Foreign students are not allowed to work in the adult entertainment business or in a business establishment where a store-based adult entertainment business is operated, or in a non-sore-based sexually oriented business, video transmission sexually oriented business, store-based telephone dating service, or non-store-based telephone dating service.
  • The “Permit to Engage in activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence” is valid only during the period you are enrolled in the educational institution. If you leave the educational institution for reasons such as graduation, withdrawal, or expulsion, you are not allowed to work part-time, even if you still have a valid Permit to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence.

 

Part-time job status of our current students

  • More than 95% of our current students work part-time. The majority of the part-time jobs include restaurants, duty-free stores, lunch box factories, transportation companies, convenience stores, McDonald’s, KFC, hotel room cleaning, etc.
  • The minimum wage in Tokyo is 1,041 yen per hour. Our current students are paid between 1,100 Yen to 1,300 Yen per hour. The monthly salary is around 100,000 Yen to 130,000 Yen. This can cover living and dormitory expenses.
  • For new students, our school helps them to find part-time jobs, prepares resumes, and teaches them how to attend part-job interviews.
  • Whenever you start or change your part-time job, you must report to the school the name, address, phone number, part-time hours, and salary of your part-time job, etc.
